Dear Oprah

You have the power to save lives. African Americans are dying from COVID-19 at an alarming rate. There are numerous reasons addressing this dire situation. Poverty. Lack of health care. Housing inequality. Racial discrimination. Low income. Low income communities. Lack of health insurance. Louisiana just released data which shows that African Americans account for 70 percent of all deaths in the state. These statistics are rapidly growing in state after state.

Health disparities have always existed for the African American community. They have twice the rate of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity compared to Caucasians. They suffer from heart failure, asthma, and hypertension and vascular disease at alarmingly higher rates and earlier in their lives. Most all of this is attributed to poverty, housing, lack of healthcare. Yet, in Michigan for example, it’s not just Detroit where the deaths are occurring, so it isn’t just the poverty and associated factors. The affluent suburbs of Michigan with substantial African American populations are also getting hit hard.

The African American population is suffering with their disproportionate death rates from this global pandemic. There is one factor of which I haven’t seen addressed. Diet. Food can either be the bridge that makes you sick or it can be the medicine which heals you. All these very diseases, diabetes, heart disease, obesity can be reversed without drugs, without costly interventions, but simply with food. The right food. More specifically, the plant-based diet.

Unfortunately, nothing can immediately resolve this issue at this moment. However, the health crisis of the African American community must be addressed in order to initiate a dramatic change in their state of health. The plant-based diet is the answer. It can literally save their lives. I can speak with total confidence about this because it saved my life. Eleven months ago my heath was at a critical point from out of control diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. I adopted the plant-based lifestyle and reversed my diabetes, no longer have high blood pressure, and lost 70 pounds.

I’m on a mission to help others take control of their health. My special focus is on the African American population, so they don’t have to be a victim to a public health crisis ever again. As an individual on the autism spectrum, I’ve experienced discrimination, bullying and harassment throughout my entire life. Not once was it ever from an African American, who in fact, have always accepted me despite that I’m different. Many of them have said to me that’s because they know I’ve walked in their shoes to know what discrimination feels like. For that I’m grateful. And for that, I must do all I can to help them in their most dire time of need.

Oprah, I need your help. You are the one who can help me make this happen. We need to start A Food Revolution for everyone, and most of all for the African American people.

In my new book A Food Revolution: How the Plant-Based Movement Can Win the Global War on Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease and Other Disease is being released at the most perfect time.

A moment in history when the time to start getting healthy has never been more critical. What you put on your plate is the big determining factor of your state of health. Don’t wait another moment. Get started today.
