The Birds Are Still Singing!

The world feels like it’s crumbling around us. Headline news that makes us scared, sad, wondering what’s yet to come. Iconic landmarks around the globe absent of humanity. Seeing photos of Times Square, the Eiffel Tower, Los Angeles freeways, the world’s largest airports, Washington, DC, Grand Central Station, Disneyland, inside restaurants, subway cars in NYC void of any human. The busiest places normally packed with people, now are ghost towns. It’s eerie. It’s frightening. It’s sad. Anxiety has crept up on most if not all of us. We turn to each other for comfort in times of such need. Except there’s not much comfort because everyone is in the same state of anxiety. Some more, some less, but mostly the same. In some respects that provides some comfort simply knowing we are all in this together. Yet that feeling of uneasiness still lingers.

Until you go outside and let your senses take over to absorb what nature has to offer. I typically spend a lot of time outdoors because I have rescue horses to feed. Ever since the pandemic began, I have been going for morning walks each day. I promise myself that once I step out the door, I must tune out news and COVID-19 and only focus on everything around me. Thirty minutes of walking and experiencing nature is far better for my mind, body and soul than any medicine could ever do.

There are so many things to enjoy. I love the warmth of the early morning sun on my shoulders. The coolness of a gentle breeze. The sounds of the trees and leaves rustling as they sway back and forth. The sound of leaves crunching as I walk along. The smell of fresh air. I like to stop and look at spring flowers that are now in bloom and watch bees that are busy pollinating the colorful flowers.

Most of all I love to listen to the birds singing their greetings to the new day. So many different birds, each with a different melody. If you stand still and close your eyes, their singing takes on a whole new dimension, so much more intense. It allows your mind to focus on that one thing, and you will experience something very different than simply listening with your eyes open.

The most overwhelming, almost surreal thought is that nature continues to go on as if all is right with the world. All of earth’s creatures are going about their day like any other day. The sun still rises each morning. The waves continue rolling in at the beach. All animals, great and small, go about their daily routines.

When you take the time to get outside and experience what our earth has to offer, it brings a sense of relief. Of normalcy. Of overwhelming peace. It is healing. It is necessary for your soul.

Get outside today.
